Laurie Baker, President and CEO of The Summit Federal Credit Union
I was so happy to learn that The Summit Federal Credit Union had been named one of the Top Workplaces in Rochester, as well as one of the Top Workplaces in the financial services industry nationwide. We are constantly looking for ways to improve, but it’s always nice to hear positive reinforcement, whether it’s from our members, our employees or the community.
The Top Workplaces awards are based on a survey given to employees of participating companies. For part of our survey, employees were asked for words that describe The Summit’s work culture. The survey company then compiled all the words and assembled them into a “culture cloud,” a freeform shape with the largest words representing those most frequently cited by employees.
In The Summit’s culture cloud, the word that stands out most is “caring.” It’s a word I often use to describe our workplace. The caring actions of our employees toward each other and members is a thread that runs through everything we do. I’ve experienced it every day of the 20-plus years I’ve worked at The Summit.
Our caring culture was even more evident this past year. I saw that employees’ dedication to the wellbeing of our members knows no bounds. In compliance with local and state guidelines, and to keep members and employees safe, we shifted how and where we worked. And yet, the care with which our employees routinely serve members remained intact. Employees pulled out all the stops to help each member, many of whom faced (and continue to face) sudden adversity.
And employees’ care for each other didn’t waiver, even though in many cases, their only interaction was virtual. Our wellness committee kicked into high gear to support us with spirit weeks to lift everyone’s mood, wellness tips to ensure we paid attention to our physical health, and virtual get-togethers that helped us retain the sense of community we’ve long enjoyed at The Summit.
Our Top Workplaces awards—and our positive culture—is directly due to the qualities and actions of our employees. They are the heart and soul of who we are, they set us apart, and they earn my admiration every day.
